Following a thorough Alternative Analysis Study, the RTA Board of Commissioners selected Basin Street at Canal — the former Southern Railway Terminal site — as the location for a future Downtown Transit Center. This site was chosen because it offers the safest, most efficient, and most accessible connection point for riders while minimizing traffic conflicts.
The next steps include completing the environmental review, developing the conceptual design, and securing funding for final design and construction. In the meantime, an Interim Downtown Transit Hub will provide enhanced waiting areas, shade, seating, and rider information to improve the experience for thousands of daily riders.
- 2025 – Environmental review and conceptual design begin
- December 2025 – Design team procurement
- 2026 – Community engagement and design development
- Spring 2027 – Construction begins
- Late 2028 – Facility opens
