RTA encourages caution and safety during total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8)
- April 5th, 2024
NEW ORLEANS – Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is encouraging riders and the rest of our residents and visitors to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings during the solar eclipse next Monday (April 8). For example, while watching the event, please be sure to stay clear of streetcar tracks and streetcars – especially at intersections and the neutral grounds – for a safe viewing experience.
“Whether you are walking, riding a bicycle or driving your car, it’s important to be informed and recognize the signs in order to take safe steps during this period,” said Mike Smith, RTA’s Chief Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Officer. “We are also working with our operators and other employees and have issued a safety alert to be vigilant and check for people who may not be paying attention to their surroundings. We are also encouraging our employees to be aware that certain areas may not be as well-lit during this time. We also are encouraging our team to wear their safety vests when outside their vehicles for extra visibility.”
Everyone is being encouraged to be particularly cautious during momentary darkness and to use protective eyewear if possible.
