NEW ORLEANS – Yesterday, March 18, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) participated in the United States Department of Homeland Security's (DHS), Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD) Capabilities Demonstration and Preparation Demonstration hosted by the City of New Orleans, for major events such as Mardi Gras and Super Bowl LIX. This demonstration is a prime example of RTA’s commitment to ensure the safety and security of the New Orleans community during major events. The demonstration was the first of several events planned for this week.
Members of the RTA’s Emergency Management Department, RTA Transit Police, Operations, and Operations Training attended the demonstration to collaborate closely with federal, state, and local agencies in evaluating and strengthening preparedness strategies.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance security measures, we are honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the CWMD coordinated demonstration,” said Craig Toomey, Senior Director of Emergency Management, RTA. “Ensuring the safety of both RTA passengers and the community remains our foremost concern. Demonstrations such as these provide valuable opportunities for us to enhance our protocols and work closely with our partners to establish a secure environment for everyone. We value our strong security partnership with the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other City emergency response departments.”
Throughout the demonstration and preparation event, RTA received familiarization training on state-of-the-art proactive security measures and detection. By actively engaging in exercises and simulations, RTA further strengthened its readiness to address any potential challenges that may arise during Super Bowl LIX and other high-profile events.
RTA remains steadfast in its dedication to maintaining a safe and efficient public transit system, serving as a vital lifeline for residents and visitors alike. As RTA continues preparation for major special events, the agency stands ready to play its part in safeguarding the well-being of the New Orleans community.
Please note that these events are CLOSED to the public and the media due to the sensitive nature of these public safety tools, trainings and discussions.
